Use Netgear Managed Switches (ProSafe) and they're... "okay". Definitely not impressed with their management interface but it's better then nothing I suppose.

Don't know why you got down voted. My thoughts exactly. A lot of small to medium businesses have unrealistic expectations in regards to how an IT department should work. Ive interviewed (and subsequently rejected job offers from) with companies where their "CTO" is the owner's son/nephew/dealer-from-a-coke-party-back-in-the-eighties and they barely have an understanding of the technology they're supposed to be responsible for. Plus I usually balk at the offer and simply say "no thank you".

He was smug (met him once), but definitely intense. Like "weight of world on your shoulders" intense. So the smug sense of satisfaction was okay.

Thats how I view it. Some days I've pulled 20 hours straight. Others, I come in for a few hours, nothing's burning down and there's no projects on the board and documentation is done.. so I just sort of shrug and go home.

This job posting is what's wrong with IT. Note the pay scale. by ravnisticYour password is your name? Awesome.in sysadmin

[–]DangerChips 0 points1 point ago

Apply anyways. Worst that can happen is that they respond back. Plus a lot of companies will over qualify or pad their ideal candidates just to see if anyone will respond. This is also a pretty shifty HR tactic to make those they do bring in feel lucky to be there (aka, they can pay them way less then the posting salary)

What part of SoCal? I see a lot of companies posting in Los Angeles and Santa Monica seems to be competing for any SysAdmin they can find.

How to discuss having been fired in job interviews. by mongotronin jobs

[–]DangerChips 0 points1 point ago

Look, you might not hire someone like that and that's okay. It is and I'm not going to judge you for that (maybe just a little). In the scheme of things though I avoid people/companies like you because of the culture they tend to instill so my advice might not be suited for that and that's okay.

But to say that you will not get hired... ever. Well, that's a bit misleading and encourages an attitude of subservience in the employee (which I despise).

I tend to hire (yes, I am management) people who are confident and have the experience I'm looking for and won't shy away from telling me something I don't want to hear just because it's inconvenient. I also work in more dynamic environments (technology) that require that sort of attitude and I tend to despise HR people because they always bring preconceived notions to what an "ideal candidate" would be to the department's I've run.

So what works for you, and me, might not work for anyone else and my advice stays the same. The main thing is having confidence in yourself and not cutting someone else off at the knees because you think there's a "right way" to approach an interview question.

You don't, and sadly some would in reality assume I am that stupid. Which is fine.

If I were your boss, I would think it dickish that you make typos an issue. But I wouldn't necessarily fire you for it.

I would, but I am still under NDA and the company is pretty computer savvy. But in all honesty, confidence is key. You made a mistake by their books, not yours. You learned your lesson and now you're willing to get back into the flow of things.

I typically explain it as plainly as possible and also explain that I grew from that in some pretty significant ways. I look at it as a bonus because it forced me to grow in my career field and excel past what that company had me doing.
