What are things that everybody does/thinks, but nobody wants to admit to? by 737900ERin AskReddit

[–]Mr_Mars 2 points3 points ago

I have a reasonably good sense of direction, but riding on the subway invariably disorients me. There have been countless occasions when I've come up to street level, started walking, only to suddenly realize I'm going the wrong way and turn around.

My philosophy is that most people are too absorbed in their own lives to give a shit what a random person is doing so long as that person is not acting in a visibly and utrageously abnormal fashion. And if there is someone who has nothing better to do than think bad thoughts about someone who accidentally goes the wrong way, I quite frankly have more important things to occupy my thoughts and do not give a shit about them.

It turns out that for the most part, if you're not drawing attention to yourself most people will be too bussy in their own lives to notice or care.

I think it's pretty clever. Maynard's seems to have good ad people so I'm not really surprised.

I mean, personally speaking, advice animals (and most memes, for that matter) tend to bother me. But judging by popularity it would seem I'm in the minority, and it's a credit to them that they used the meme correctly.

Where are you located? The War Store is an option if you're in the US, or Miniwargaming.com if you're in Canada.

For models, I would say go with Mulg first, and you're going to want an Earthborn at some point. Earthborns personally are one of the models I least like to see on the table. I'd also suggest a Krielstone bearer, since the protective aura is awesome and it's nice to be able to bank fury if you've got a few spare points. Apart from that I'll leave it to the guys who actually play Trolls -- this is just the stuff that makes me hurt the most.

That is the exact opposite of my experience with Brother. I've got one of the MFCs that's pushing a decade of service and still works like the day it was unboxed. Nothing done to it but toner/drum changes.

Modem/Wireless Router Combo VS Separate Modem & Wireless Router by makphistoin hardware

[–]Mr_Mars 13 points14 points ago

Combo units are generally not preferred for two reasons. First they can cause you to spend more than is otherwise necessary when they break, and second the hardware is generally less powerful than what you'd get in a dedicated router.

If you're on DSL you can get a TP-Link modem for about $20. Then pick the appropriate Linksys router that has the feature set you need to go with it. Tue E series routers are quite solid, and I recommend them to anyone who asks.

Thinking of migrating EVERYTHING to linux. Need some input/guidance. by CoobadivinJr. Sysadminin sysadmin

[–]Mr_Mars 2 points3 points ago

One of the key questions you haven't answered: how comfortable is your admin team with Linux? In terms of distro selection, that's going to be a key factor. If you don't have a high level team that's used to working with Linux every day (the kinds of guys who have compiled kernels before, for example) it might be worth it to fork out some cash for RHEL or something similar. Having an escalation path for the 'oh shit' moments can be extremely helpful during the learning/familiarization phase.

If that's not a concern and you're just looking at Debian/CentOS... pick your favourite. They're both about equal in my opinion as server distros (and are the two most worthwhile choices for experienced admins) so you'll do equally well with one or the other. Debian is a bit more user-friendly but I prefer CentOS because I think it tends to have saner defaults on a lot of things. I also like Yum and RPM-based package management over the mess of .debs and APT, but opinions vary so that's not really something to base your decision on.

Logitech's customer support is AWESOME! by Tracaptarosin hardware

[–]Mr_Mars 2 points3 points ago

I absolutely love Logitech. My first 'real' (more than two button) mouse was a Logitech MX 500, back when they were new on the market. I think I used that thing for about 8 years, and then upgraded to an MX 518. By the time I had retired the MX 500 it had seen so much use that the paint had worn off the buttons.

I also use the Trackman trackballs for productivity, because I find they're the most comfortable for 8-10 (or sometimes 12-16) hour workdays. Also stellar devices -- my only complaint is that the current model (Logitech M570) doesn't come in a wired version. I understand that they're in love with their unifying receivers and I'll admit that it's pretty cool tech; I'll also admit that the batteries do last for ages. My older M570 has been going for just over a year now with the original battery. Even so, I don't understand why I can't just have the bloody thing on a cord in the first place.

I've never had them replace a device for me like the OP. I suppose I could've tried it with my MX 500 when it finally bit the dust, but honestly what's the point? I feel like I got my money's worth on it.

So for example my iPod has about 2200 songs on it right now. That comes out to $2178. Who has that much money to spend on just songs??

People who like music?

Not sure what my vinyl collection is worth by now, but I'm quite sure it's more than that. And I have Radiohead and Foo Fighters, so it's not like it's all thirty year old LPs.

I happily pay for content where I can. In some cases the legal avenues are actually far easier than the illegal ones, or else come with value-adds that the pirated versions don't give you (extra features on Blu Rays, for example). The only time I'll turn to piracy is if the content I want isn't made readily available. The way I see it, if the content providers aren't interested in making it easy for me to acquire their product (or worse, aren't interested in letting me acquire it at all) then I don't have to feel particularly invested in making sure they get my money for it.

I'm strongly considering a Mikrotik Routerboard to serve as the new core router on my home network. I've got one of these at the office handling our backup ADSL links, and it's some pretty rockin' hardware for the price. Native IPv6, OSPF, load balancing, etc. They even do BGP (though why one might need that at home is beyond me). All that for ~$200 is a pretty sweet deal.

Have Offline Botmatches Gone the Way of the Dodo? by facepoppiesin Games

[–]Mr_Mars 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I'm having this flood of nostalgia.

I remember playing against CRBots in Quake 2, back when Quake 2 was new and exciting. I, like most folks back then, had 56k dialup internet. If I could connect to a server with a ping under 300 I considered it fast. Needless to say, online play was sometimes a pain. Then one day a friend told me he'd discovered this mod that let you play multiplayer, but offline with AI players. Minds were blown.

I have nothing to add, here. I'm just thinking that if you're right and bots are going away, it will be an example of a technology that I lived from inception to extinction. And that makes me feel old.

There's definitely an argument to be made for display port, since it's backwards compatible with VGA and DVI, and also compatible with HDMI. Except, of course, that adapters are required for all of those.

If it were my server I'd just buy an adapter to leave in the rack. Problem solved.

Should the Canadian Government support the CBC? by judygarglandin canada

[–]Mr_Mars 2 points3 points ago

The old idea that publicly funded corporations are inefficiently run by definition is a fiscal-conservative trope based on Reagan-era economic theories that doesn't bear out in reality.

Here's the way I see it:

We have, as broadcasting models, two major influences to draw from. To the south is the American model; the vast majority of their content is created by privately funded corporations. PBS does put out some good stuff (and is one of the few things I genuinely miss about cable) but it's influence on the US cultural landscape doesn't even approach what the CBC does here, let alone our other market to consider.

The other option is demonstrated in the UK, where the BBC is hugely influential. The BBC is very well funded and produces top-notch content as a result. Dr. Who, Top Gear, Monty Python's Flying Circus, A Bit Of Fry And Laurie, Being Human, Life On Mars, The Office are all examples of the sort of content a well-funded public broadcaster is able to produce. Many of these programs are unlike anything produced in the private sector, because the BBC doesn't have to be concerned about profit margins -- they're free to experiment with different formats and concepts without worrying about enriching their board of directors, and thus aren't bound to produce things in well-trodden channels of proven profitability (crime dramas, three-camera sitcoms, etc). The downside to this model, of course, is that as a public broadcaster increases influence it becomes more difficult to compete with, and that in turn results in a much poorer selection in terms of privately produced content. Many US shows make it to the UK one or two seasons behind, for example, if they make it there at all.

So far here in Canada, we've been able to strike a balance. We have a well-funded public broadcaster that produces quite a bit of good content. Shows like The Hour, Rick Mercer Report, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Republic of Doyle and The Nature of Things are examples of good Canadian content produced by the CBC. Not to be discounted either is their news programming; aside from the political satire (a genre we got going long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report came along) we have The National and The Fifth Estate, along with local news content that simply wouldn't exist in our many small communities if the CBC weren't around. This stuff isn't just frivolity, here -- it's essential in shaping our cultural identity, which would otherwise be at serious risk of being subsumed due to the tidal wave of American content crossing the border. And all of this isn't even touching on CBC Radio; we're only talking about television so far.

On the other hand, our national broadcaster does not carry so much weight that it's able to monopolize the market. There's still a lot of room for privately funded broadcasters as well, and we have networks like City TV, Omni, Global and CTV as a result. These networks are able to import some of the best international content (primarily but not exclusively from the US market) and, thanks to the sometimes-controversial CanCon regulations have even produced a few homegrown gems as well. The ever popular Trailer Park Boys was picked up by Showcase, and CTV brought us Corner Gas and Elvis Costello's severely underrated Spectacle.

It's my opinion that we should work as a nation to maintain this balance. Honestly, I think the CBC could do with a bit more funding, but I don't think we need to turn it into a clone of the BBC. I certainly think that cutting it's funding (or worse, doing away with it entirely) puts our cultural identity at serious risk, and is a very dangerous proposition. If anything, I'd love it if we could see a few more Canadian-produced programs created that are of sufficient quality (and are marketed well enough) that they would see export to international markets; I think it would be a great way to increase the Canadian "brand" and help combat the idea that we're simply USA, Jr.

So short answer: yes, the government should absolutely support the CBC, and you should, too.

How to monitor it all by trompeleJack of All Tradesin sysadmin

[–]Mr_Mars 1 point2 points ago

This is what we use and it's awesome. Both Nagios and Cacti are extremely flexible. It takes a bit of fiddling to get everything set up just right but once it's all in place you can monitor anything and everything you want, have alerts sent on all manner of criteria, and then have RRD-based graphs to refer to for troubleshooting. Combined with remote logging it gives you pretty much everything you need for troubleshooting all in one spot.

I'd check out Cacti-EZ if you haven't already. It provides a lot of handy tools in addition to Cacti itself.
