Help with Demon Hunter? by Dracovitchin Diablo

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 1 point2 points ago

My view:

  • If you're getting hit you're doing it wrong.
  • Smoke Screen is a "must have" ability. Clears threat, makes you immune to attacks, and sends the mobs running away from you.
  • Vault is unreliable. You get stuck on scenery or a mob just ports behind you - waste of time.
  • Caltrops can be good, but there are tons of other, better ways of getting the same effect without having to spend resources or GCD. Like Thrill of the Hunt, a Rune, Gear, Companion Specials, or just good old Entangling Shot.
  • Rapid Fire+Withering Fire, Chakram+Twin, or Elemental Arrow+Ball Lightning (24+) are all amazing. I used Rapid Fire until 24 since it is great at both single target AND groups. Then switched and am staying with Elemental Arrive+Ball Lightning.
  • Chakram is likely the most powerful AE in that line, but it is crappy on single targets.

It doesn't matter. Your keyboard is made at one of these companies, as is your mouse, your monitor, your Android phones, your WP7 phones, hell it would be a shorter list to list things NOT impacted by the working practices in China.

You realise that Foxconn is just an example of the kind of abuse all employees in China feel - one which has been named and shamed largely because of their relationship with Apple?

If anything Foxconn employees because of all the negative PR likely have better working standards than some of their competitors do.

If you're using anything fabricated in China (which you are, 100% chance) then you have just as much or as little "blood" with or without using Foxconn specifically.

Plus now a lot of manufacturers are moving their operations out of China because China has started to clamp down on worker exploitation and increase working conditions. Ironic huh?

You seem to be combing a whole bunch of concepts into sentences that make no sense. Was this post made by some kind of pseudo-random economics generator?

With the exception of this:

Minimum wage laws, increase unemployment by removing the bottom rungs of the labour market. See: Edgar the Exploiter

Nothing else answers the question he actually asked:

...remember when safety regulations, fair employment, equality laws and basic workers rights ruined the global economy?

As far as minimum wage goes - it has also been shown, multiple times, that increasing the minimum wage moves money from the top 5% down to the bottom 95%.

The lower someone's income the higher their expenditure back into the local economy is. Which is to say that if someone on minimum wage gets a 5% bump in their income, they will spend near 100% back into local goods and services.

So by increasing minimum wage you actually generate jobs which in turn generate jobs, and on up until both the minimum wage earners have more opportunity, as do the richer employees supporting them in their jobs, and even up to company creating as new companies are created just to fulfil the demand created by the higher cash flow in the economy.

You review the review notes, well that settles it. No way they could slip a backdoor in there.

not a single patch with a security hole has gotten through

That's a ridiculous statement.

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 13 points14 points ago

I don't think you understand the realities of peer review.

Thousands of patches, millions of lines of code, and only a small handful of people who actually need to review the patches before they go main-line.

How many hours have you spent review other people's patches?

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 8 points9 points ago

I like CM and have installed it in the past. But, let's be honest, all that does is shift the issue.

Instead of worrying that the manufacturer is installing backdoors, you now instead have to worry that CM contributors are slipping one past the people in charge of merging patches into the main line build.

Plus since few people actually assemble their own CM ROMs via compiling the CM main-line and inserting the drivers, there is also very real potential for someone to alter the operating system at the packaging stage.

Need Help Choosing a Class in Diablo 3 by StephanoFanBoyin Diablo

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 0 points1 point ago

It makes no difference. They are all DPS classes, they can all work solo or as part of a larger group.

I suggest you level each one up to level 4~5 and see which one you "can't stop playing."

What do you think the best build for a Demon Hunter, and what build are you guys using? by TigerRat1in Diablo

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 1 point2 points ago

Normal difficulty is a time for you to try out different skills and practice getting the best out of them. Even if people give you a built 90% of it won't be unlocked at your level making it worthless.

First time Diablo Player. How did I not play this in past! by Towellieein Diablo

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle -1 points0 points ago

Diablo 1 and to a lesser extent 2 weren't as good as this. There weren't polished, in particular what I will loosely call the "interface" (user interaction).

I own D1 and D2, they are fine games. But I found playing them "irritating" due to how awkward everything feels and how often it feels like you're fighting the game as much as the demons.

Same reason I don't play Eve Online and did play WoW/SWTOR - the former has a terrible user interface and the latter are exceptional.

PS - This post isn't focusing on the story or appearance of these games. Purely how gamer-friendly they are.

No need. BlueTooth requires you to accept the connection on the phone its self - which they cannot do if it is locked.

Yes. You can over-write the old ROM just fine. You just cannot access it.

If you want to avoid spam and you aren't a massive popular site (like 99% of the internet) then just by being unique you'll block 90% of spam - since it isn't cost effective to develop a custom solution for your site.

A lot of wordpress sites get hit with spam and spend tons of time and money with blacklists/solutions but if all they did was alter the template so the boxes had different names (e.g. "comment943949494") and leave the defaults as hidden unused form elements then they will stop damn near all automated postings.

I guess what are you asking us - a design question? A implementation question?

How are you generating these options now?

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 0 points1 point ago

Is this meant to be a question? Because I'm not seeing one.

You have to give us some idea of what you're using to draw these "menus" and why added an additional item to a menu you yourself are creating would be hard?

  • Lock your phone

What do you think Android is still missing? by aesamattkiin Android

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 26 points27 points ago

Dedicated MP3 decoding and playback. On an iPhone/iPod Touch if you're playing audio and have the screen off the darn thing will have what seems like an unlimited supply for battery power.

On my ICS phone, when playing audio it only uses slightly less battery just due to the screen being off but ultimately everything else on the phone is in a full powered-on state.

Plus Android audio jumps and lags. Even on phones more powerful than PCs made ten years ago they can't make audio smooth. Another issue you would never see on an iDevice.

Borderlands 2 Ultimate Vault Hunter Edition Revealed! by thelastquestionin gaming

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle -2 points-1 points ago

Alright I'll eat the downvotes - I think that looks boring. To me a good limited edition needs items you can quantify in terms of their value, for example:

  • Soundtrack (you can listen to it)
  • Pretty DLC (i.e. non-game-impacting) (e.g. WoW's pets)
  • Physical Goods (Statues, Night Vision Goggles, Keychains, Wallet, T-Shirts, etc).
  • Basically anything that you won't glance at and then never look at again.

Most of the items in this set are quite literally produced using a colour photocopier:

  • Vending Machine Box
  • Certificate of Authenticity
  • Creatures of Pandora Chart
  • Postcards (wow cardboard! shit just got real)
  • Sticker Set
  • Map
  • Book
  • Field Notes

So what do you get which is worth a darn?

  • The game
  • Steal box for the game
  • Bobblehead (kinda fun)
  • Replica Chest
  • Downloadable Comic (they won't even print this?)

And what does this all cost you, $150! Wow, that's a lot of money. You can easily find a little Netbook, Chinese Android Tablet, or heck get an iPod Nano and still have enough money left over to buy the standard edition of this game.

I guess my point is: If you feel it is worth $150 of your money then more power to you but honestly the kind of excitement in this thread just boggles my mind.

Most people here won't be able to afford it and really producing something this expensive with as little value as it contains just sends a loud message that game publishers will stop at no length to exploit fan's loyalty and excitement about a popular franchise.

Blizzard apologises for Diablo 3 launch server problems - they "did not go far enough" preparing servers by zakislamin Games

Well given that you're almost certainly bottlenecked by your user's internet connection rather than your internal fiber network or your SAN's IO I cannot see it being an issue.

Blizzard apologises for Diablo 3 launch server problems - they "did not go far enough" preparing servers by zakislamin Games

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 0 points1 point ago

Can you say with absolute certainty that it would have been viable, or even possible, for Blizzard to run Diablo 3 servers off cloud infrastructure?

Logically, yes. Since you can treat your cloud infrastructure exactly like physical infrastructure.

Keep in mind we are talking about what is known as a "private cloud" or datacentre cloud if you'd like.

We take a normal physical server, we install management software (a Hypervisor) on it, and then we manage that server's images from a centralised location - spin it up, spin it down, pull down new images, upload a paused image, etc.

Now you might be thinking - "It it is virtualised therefore slow!" but that is no longer true. At one stage, it absolutely was true. But thanks to CPU-virtualisation support it is now damn near 1:1 with a physical server for MOST operations.

Upgrading a new PC to Windows 8 will cost you... $14.99 by a2ztoain gadgets

[–]UnoriginalGuyKVM: like typing through treacle 7 points8 points ago

This is the same promotion they had before Windows 7 shipped. It stops people from delaying PC purchases (or at least decreases that likelihood).

If you pay the $15 you still wind up with the OEM BIOS locked version of Windows 8 that would have otherwise shipped on the hardware. So you can't use this to "upgrade" from an OEM 7 to a retail/any-BIOS OEM 8.

On the positive side - most manufacturer's now charge you for the "pleasure" of getting a real reinstallation disk. Most of them give you a way to make one but that also reinstalls all of the tat (more like re-imaging).
