AFAIK, even though he had a fairly weak password, the experience of getting your account hacked on MS's online services sucks way more than Google's services.

Personal anecdote: I had my XBL account hacked not too long ago - the only reason I noticed it was hacked was because $100 was spent off of my account. I called up MS support, who had to conduct an investigation and LOCK MY ACCOUNT for about two weeks straight in order to figure out who logged into my account. (I would've thought this would be fairly easy to detect - anything outside of my /24 at home would be a prime suspect.)

At least with Gmail, you get two factor authentication, plus insight on who logged into your account at what time, and where.

Meh, Splunk's impressive, but it's way too expensive. I used to use logstash and graylog2, worked well for me.

Go for experience rather than certs - try to do either desktop support, NOC, or support engineering first. You will want to find out more about Linux internals, and hopefully, gain more insight on how to deal with large sites with a hundred or so machines.

Automation is also extremely important - learn bash and some other interpreted language, like Python or Ruby. Also, check out Puppet or Chef, as these are used quite a bit in handling configuration of hundreds of machines at lots of companies.

Also, be completely open to ideas, but go through and think about why the idea might be good, what cases it might break down, etc. Cargo culting ideas is fine if you're just starting out, but gaining insight behind an idea is incredibly valuable.

Lastly, consider the companies you want to eventually work for. Amazon and Google don't care about certs, and neither do startups. Other Fortune 500 companies might care, however.

You can do latency based routing with Route 53, which you can use most effectively with EC2 instances, or with some decent approximations with anything outside of the EC2 network:

If you wanted load balancing, you can tie in LBR with Elastic LB's, plus AWS CloudFront for your CDN.

I really like Gothic 1/2's combat system (as well as Risen) - you can die very easily if you don't know how to parry and dodge effectively, even if you have your skills leveled up fairly high. You're also often fighting against multiple enemies at a time, many of them being humans with swords, too (so you have to be very careful with your swordplay, as they can parry and dodge like you)

Building iptables rules with Puppet or Chef is annoying - I tend to gravitate toward ufw or shorewall, since they're a bit easier to configure with config management systems.

I'd read the docs whenever you get confused by terminology or need to know anything about the services - I find that they're very comprehensive.

No - R53 is an authoritative DNS service, so you don't have to run BIND.
