I thought about submitting this, but felt it might be too interesting.

When I stack the lid on the bottom of my coffee tumbler, it looks like a lighthouse. by eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall adminin mildlyinteresting

[–]eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall admin[S] 1 point2 points ago

I did a lot of research after buying a cheap one I didn't like. The version with the handle seemed prone to breaking, and although some people seem to think that issue was corrected, others were still reporting problems.

I really like this tumbler though. Hot coffee for 4-5 hours as advertised.

Commercial for my 90s "Dream" computer that sadly I never got. The graphics look actually good and it even somehow had home automation?? by JDX3DSin buildapc

[–]eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall admin 3 points4 points ago

I actually owned this computer. It was an upgrade from a 486DX; a Pentium 166 with an ATI Rage II. I added a Monster3D graphic accelerator to play Quake2. :)

Eventually it became known as the "Craptiva" as it got old, but it was a pretty good machine in its prime. And we even purchased the X10 stuff to control the stuff in the home, although it never got put to much use.

This jumped on to my car as I was leaving for work and proceeded to stare me down by eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall adminin mildlyinteresting

Yes, I believe it is.

I pulled in to the apartment's front office, grabbed the user manual out of my car's glove box, and coaxed him into jumping on it so I could put him in the bushes. I then left for work.

As a league bowler, I've seen this many times. It's still quite rare though, and mildly interesting.

Perhaps [4], but I still want to know what I'm missing.

I see one half of the pizza cooked and the other half is raw. It's not obviously split like a normal before/after picture, so either they blended the picture or actually cooked half of a pizza and not the other.

Then where's the obvious split line? If it's edited, they must have blended it, which means they had to have taken a before and after picture from roughly the same angle and then merged the two together without it being too obvious.

[–]eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall admin 5 points6 points ago

Wait, what?

Did you take an identical picture before and after and then Photoshop it? Hmm, the pepperonis are in different places so that probably isn't it. Did you somehow only bake one half of the pizza?

I'm so confused. What is this witchcraft?

You can dance around things like this all day. I've found it's best not to debate the individual "facts" that the Bible states. It's a battle that will eventually turn in the favor of a religious fanatic. Proving a negative is what they specialize in, so steer clear.

Instead, I find it's best to leave the burden of proof upon them, but don't let them use circumstantial evidence as conclusive proof. Most of the time they'll describe how they can prove events in their religious texts occurred. What you have to push is the fact that just because an event happened and you have proof, there's no proof that it was divinely inspired. If I go into a room and walk out with a marble and say that God gave it to me, the marble is not proof in itself that God exists.

If you follow this formula, you can avoid the pitfalls of trying to debate the intricacies of the Bible.

[Build Help] Hi buildapc! Is now a good time to build a new gaming PC, or are there any great components just around the corner that I should wait for? by sapagunnarin buildapc

[–]eviljollyAnything that plugs into a wall admin 1 point2 points ago

If you have a Microcenter in your area, check this out. $189 for i6 3570Ks.

Not only that, but they're offering $50 off several Z77 motherboards. I snagged one and it's running great. Yeah Ivy Bridge doesn't overclock as well as Sandy, but it makes up for it in performance, an the extra features are worth it. I had it at 4.8GHz stable using just an H100 for a few days, but put it down to 4.5 for better temps.

Also, if you're looking at SSDs and you really care about performance, make sure you get one with synchronous NAND. They'll perform much better. Manufacturers don't always make this obvious, but Google will usually tell you. ;)

I'm using a GTX680, but I only got it because I was impatient. The GTX670 is a great card, and probably more bang for your buck.

What is my computer doing when it shuts down? by painapplezin buildapc

A halfway installed update can create havoc if it's something critical.

Unfortunately chkdsk will not normally resolve this issue. Chkdsk only looks for file system errors. If it finds an orphaned file it won't put the right version in its place. On the other hand, sfc (system file checker) does exactly that. It will find the corrupted file and sort it out by pulling the needed file from installation media. A downside to SFC is that sometimes Windows will think updates are installed that really are not, since you're using original versions. Manually removing and adding updates back in can be a real pain. I usually won't bother fixing this manually if I have an image of the system.

A larger problem is when you have registry corruption. Fortunately with system restore files you can find old registry hives and restore them even if the system is unbootable. This isn't nearly as straight forward as a normal system restore, bu it won't be that bad if you're comfortable with working via command line or a live CD.

An EULA is a legal contract, and it is legally binding. Breaking it is illegal, at least in any country where the law stipulates that.
