Occupy Journalists Stopped, Searched, Handcuffed and Interrogated at Gunpoint: 'During the stop, search and interrogation, Chicago PD took the journalists’ hard drives and slammed them against “running boards four or five times.” Content recorded by the journalists was deleted from Ustream.' by maxwellhillin politics

Why the downvote? The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.
Powernut was alluding to the powerful 1970 beat poem by black artist Gil Scott-Heron during the post Civil Rights Activism as a call to a media saturated and complacent audience that "change" was coming and would be "real time."

How do you hire your IT professionals? by trouphazin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 0 points1 point ago

Geographic location is moot point. Just email them everyday adking for a custom MMM console of something you can monitor for them. Is there a scripted routine you could oversee. can you be invited to a a deployment to run cord(s) ot something. Worst is they say no.

AT&T DNS Outage by brxmepin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

Those are the old sbcglobal.net DNS. I guess technically ATT now, but that's how I consider them. We are about to transition from Covad to an ATT circuit and I just tried pinging the Central (Chicago?) DNS they gave me and 12.127.16.68 is up, but 12.127.16.72 is down.

What is the best resource to prepare for the MS 70-640 exam? by stealthmodeactivein sysadmin

::Wall'o'text critically hits for 3000 hps::
jk, no problem. Anything to help the next guy. I'd prefer our profession be (reasonably) saturated w/knowledgable techies. MS can make their tests as hard as they want and do - often forcing you to rely on personal experience and excellent process of elimination skills. So book + VMs + technet will reasonably prepare you.
Often Technet has addl step-by-step lab guides that go in further depth than MSPress book.

I was personally surprised to see labmansteve of all people volunteer that method too.

What is the best resource to prepare for the MS 70-640 exam? by stealthmodeactivein sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 9 points10 points ago

I'll volunteer that I've been studying 70-640 and took my test this past Sat. Unfortunately I failed it w/a 681, but I'm putting nose to grindstone harder and re-taking next week sometime. So I have a good perspective on this:

First I used ExamCram and the MSPress book while leafing through a couple of other sources. The MSPress book (R2) edition is the best source for the top down, hit all the bases. Read every chapter and do every lab. I was able to run all labs in VMPlayer on a dual core (core2duo) w/4GB RAM desktop, easy requirements. The book's included MeasureUp practice test is also excellent as far as how it looks and feels to actual exam.
That being said, bear in mind the following caveats. The test won't have much in the way of "easy gimmes" from the book. In fact, when doing RMS, FedSvcs, and LDS in the book it'll read like a technet overview w/out a lot of depth, so read up all the articles from TechNet on those roles.
Likewise, read through all the changes in R2 as well as R2 SP1 which may have been left out of book where it relates to the 70-640 (AD Recycle Bin, yes; DNS Socket Pooling, no). Also, two things to be aware of that the book didn't cover: Event Viewer Subscriptions & AD Snapshots - google them and practice them.

Remember too, AD is a very mature technology. "everybody" knows how to create objects and GPOs so it doesn't hit you very hard there. AD's success is entirely dependent on replication, communication, and security. That's why DNS and CertSvcs is hit so hard. Know your "role based delegations" (IE what security level allows a user or group what access in different roles).

Make sure you're familiar w/command lines for REPADMIN, NTDSUTIL, DNSCMD, CERTUTIL, and the DS___ commands. The book falls a bit short on DNS coverage as well. I'd recommend picking up the 70-642 book and leafing through its coverage of DNS as it relates to zone transfers, delegation, and DNS application partitions.

Someone told me, expect 2 questions about LDS, RMS, & FedSvcs - whole lot of dns & certsvcs - and everything else. I found that to be accurate.

Good luck.

Planting an Active Directory DC in the DMZ by Enxerin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

Sounds a bit like fort knox as is stacking all the gold in the front lobby.
Wouldn't an ADLDS implementation be better for his goal? I forget how much LDS can integrate w/AD. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733064(v=ws.10).aspx ctrl+f "integrate"
otherwise DMZDC has own site w/preferred bridgehead to a hardened internal DC. Then clients only auth internally and ad still talks.

How do you find a great development lab sys admin? by sixarmin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

Dude, working a lab just to test products and configs in all scenarios as a break/fix and attempt to find limitations w/out actual uptime stress would rock. I never get more tunnel visioned then when i'm in a vm trying a change or deployment pre-production. I could turn into a startup techhead working ot for the love abd challenge of it.

So, what's the "right" way to synchronize time on a domain? by AgentSnazzin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 0 points1 point ago

IM is so goofy in theory. You see all these whitepapers w/multiple exclamation point notes "Never host IM on a GC!!!!1!" with the caveat, unless all DCs are GCs then it's redundant and you're like "wtf is the issue then?"

Whoa, the AD Recycle Bin as it relates to IM is something I did not know and the brief bullet point makes me worried about replication now because if all DCs are updating themselves, who is authoritative? To the Google Mobile!

So, what's the "right" way to synchronize time on a domain? by AgentSnazzin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

If DC is SBS then it holds all 5 FSMO roles. Std, datacenter, and enterprise split roles (or should). Google FSMO roles, wikipedia has good overview and technet goes into depth about it. It's good to know since AD essentially works based on those roles and DNS.
FSMO roles only exist on specified DCs.

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

The other consideration is that pdc emulator also processes account lockouts. So if time drift is serious issue between clients/srvrs you'll get false lockouts and replication issues.

So, what's the "right" way to synchronize time on a domain? by AgentSnazzin sysadmin

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 2 points3 points ago

Trevorishere is on the ball. The DC w/pdc emulator role syncs externally. All clients and servers sync to this per domain. The DC will by default sync to time.windows.com, but usually better to set differently using W32TIME cmd. I use pool.ntp.org. Others use NIST.
Just remember to put NTP allow rule on firewall. Also NET TIME is a legacy command th at doesn't set anything, stick to w32time.
If you set all clients to synch external, you're likely to be blocked for DoS.

if someone else in the company caused a problem by waiting too long or not doing what they should, it's not your problem when someone else doesn't do their job right.

Did they just enter the private market or something? Only certainties in life are "Death, Taxes, and Blame Game" cuz you can guarantee that individual who caused problem/delay is going to blame IT.

Every time this event occurred, I'd set up laptop/projector/video conferencing as needed and while they caught up on their meeting I'd send an email to him, CC'ed to partners.
Dear [napoleon complex],
If a meeting has equipment or setup needs, please tell me at the time of scheduling so there will be no delay in getting you ready. kthxbai

I was most familiar with the GoToMeeting that..."...started 3 minutes ago with our biggest client! Hurry up and get this fixed." Same mgr, always. It's as if, by yelling at me the importance and seriousness of the matter, it transferred his lack of scheduling or notification ability to be totally my fault.

edit: those were the heady days when excite.com was the only game in town for searches and even then word of mouth and webrings were a more reliable way to find interesting content.

It happens.
As a teenager my buddy and I are hanging out after church. He realizes after looking around his mom and dad left. So we don't have spare change and he has to call collect on payphone. When his dad asks who it is, he gives his name and before an explanation - his dad tells him, "He's not home" and hangs up on him. God it was hilarious.

I've seen it recommended, and seems like a good idea, to have a Github account. That way, everytime you write a script - just sanitize it and upload to Github in your personal repository. Other than the Perl archive (which is also recommended to contribute), I'm not aware of another way someone can upload their batches, python code, PowerShell, etc to prove to an interviewer that you can script.

That's crazy, hit the MS Learning page for it and there is no e-learning, books, or classes. I'd say the best you can do is TechNet all the learning categories.
If you can, download a trial or TechNet subscription that allows you to do a barebones SBS install/config per the above links on tested skills. Browse amazon, there's numerous books for SBS, even including MS Pocket Administrator guides that can help.
