FYI - perhaps fixed by now, but as of 12/11 Malwarebytes and Sophos did not play nicely together.

Sometimes those 3am phone calls create a situation where the manager of that other department needs to be notified immediately of the situation. ;-)

Next, it's meetings with executive staff to determine "why we are unwilling to solve this problem".

This is guaranteed: when the inevitable disaster strikes you will be first in line for the blame. Make sure you perform your due diligence and email your bosses with the results.

Over the last couple of years, my job has transformed into that of a sysadmin and I feel completely lost... by DoubleRaptorin sysadmin

There was a post yeterday about a failed RAID array and "hardware was a problem for the backups". A retired/recycled workstation running Ubuntu can serve as a backup destination. No Excuse!

Nothing is more important than backups. There is no excuse for not doing backups, free alternatives are available for the software and you can always cobble together something for a target.

Anyone own an IT consulting company out there? by jumajumain sysadmin

Offices without IT staff are typically < 50 users. Plan on spending 5-10% of your time following up on overdue invoices.

My business consists of two parts: direct support for organizations with no IT staff and as support on demand for places that don't have enough IT staff. For the direct support I only work on retainer, 2 hours minimum per month. Most work comes by referral.

The support on demand usually consists of being on site from a few days to a few weeks. There is a lot of this kind of work, but you have to be persistent to get paid. You get a lot of exposure to various technologies this way but you're expected to be an instant expert on everything.

1099 employment has a lot of tax implications, make sure you understand how Social Security works, and do a SEP for the savings and tax shelter.
