Eh probably right on target for a secretary or a desktop support person for a small company. But nowhere near what you'd have to pay someone to do that all that crap.

if you're just doing webserver monitoring go with a server like websitepulse does all of what you want (I believe) and its cheap.

Ubuntu 12.04 in production? by Dial-A-Lanin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 0 points1 point ago

I'm running our Development web server on it and haven't seen any problems. Apache/Samba/Ruby/Php + ad integration all working fine. Spun it up when it was still in beta since I set it up a month before launch and I wanted to be in the LTS channel for as long as possible.

How does Google help your job? by ha1o2surferin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 2 points3 points ago

She's absolutely right you should know everything about everything and never have to do any outside research on anything ever. You should know your Operating Systems backwards and forwards and have such an extensive knowledge and memory that you can tell what that patch is going to do by the mere size of the download. If you even as much as look at a README file you're failing at your job and should hang your head in shame. You should know the software so well that you know what is going to be patched before the vendor does, you should be waiting for it, expecting it, you should be ready like the dog's ready to bark at the mailman because he knows the mailman comes everyday at noon. If I ever catch any of my employees doing any kind of research I'll shove them out the door before they even finish typing google.

There is a reason we have approved software and nothing is supposed to be installed without my approval. by 486_8088Holistic IT Adminin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 13 points14 points ago

Um, you only have yourself to blame. You don't need to give them admin to install webex. It runs in java or you install it for them. and be glad it was just iTunes could have been a lot worse. I install iTunes anyway to be nice.

Thinking of migrating EVERYTHING to linux. Need some input/guidance. by CoobadivinJr. Sysadminin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 7 points8 points ago

I have to agree. Especially when it comes to windows and linux. You can't run you're dev environment in linux and have it translate to Windows seamlessly. Or if you run ASP or MSSQL or any other M$ specific tech. Now you can however set up a full Linux environment and transition over project by project

File Server Clean Up by two2tepsin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 2 points3 points ago

I like this idea. Especially with a 10 year old server. Set up a new server with new shares and tell them to move what they need into some organized structure. Make the old one READ ONLY so they have too. Then archive archive archive.

I need advice for how to get our users to use the help desk. I'm at my wits' end. by JustChuckin sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 12 points13 points ago

This right here and if they stop you just be polite and say "I'm sorry I am working on ticket xxxx for Bob and then I have to do ticket yyyyy for Sally and then ticket zzzzz for Rich, please submit a ticket to get into the queue because it would not be fair to Bob, Sally and Rich if I put you before them because they have already submitted tickets."

You just need to politely remind them that they need to book your time and also do not be afraid to submit tickets for them.

Known Adobe Issues

Not sure if the AD issues were fixed in 10.7.3 yet. The adobe issues have kept me away from it since thats the bread and butter here.

Anyone run mac mini servers? by chewy747in sysadmin

[–]telecomando2 0 points1 point ago

Not really. Do some research on here and all the other places. Even the reviews in the app store. There are still issues with Lion that need to be worked out, especially with windows integration. Snow Leopard is just more tested and stable right now.
