Moving to Brookline, what's the parking situation there? by Whambamthkumaamin boston

Live in Brookline and I have a car. Check craigslist for parking spot rentals. It is doable but a PITA.

Can a dark ale really count as a summer brew? Like Full Sail Session Black? by kvnmllr08in beer

it is my goal in life to change this perception. heh.

Can a dark ale really count as a summer brew? Like Full Sail Session Black? by kvnmllr08in beer

Yep. Just because a beer is dark doesn't necessarily mean it has a full mouthfeel or body. It can still be clean and refreshing.

call the cops next time? I guess that would be a bad idea because you supplied alcohol to minors.

hotside oxidation is a myth. it is very difficult to dissolve gas in hot liquid, hence why we chill the keg before force carbing.

THERE I SAID IT! ;)

Brewmasters of r/homebrew: Please help me diagnose my ailing ale (aka My first brew) by complex_reductionin Homebrewing

[–]tiredofnick 0 points1 point ago

Couple things, so far it looks alright. It is probably just not off gassing very much. I made a session ale once that never even bubbled the airlock once but fermented out totally fine. Just take a reading now with the hydrometer, and again in a couple days. If it hasn't changed then it could mean it isn't fermenting at all, or it has already finished.

How much "beer syrup" (aka liquid malt extract) did you use? You can calculate what the starting gravity should be from that amount.

And yeah, you should boil the wort. With extract brewing you only need to boil about 2.5 gallons of wort. During that boil process you'd add hops to bitter and flavor the beer. The process you followed will likely lead to a kinda boring tasting beer.

Read this book by John Palmer. It is a great help when starting out brewing, and it is only 10 bucks.

[Calling All Professional Brewers] What equipment would I require to start a microbrewery? by BeerInMyBellyin Homebrewing

[–]tiredofnick 2 points3 points ago

Well I'll take a first shot.

First you need the brew house, so that means an HLT, mash tun, and kettle. Let's say you start off with a 1.5bbl system. Mash tun should probably be closer to 3bbl, but the HLT and kettle can be just a shade over 1.5bbl. So get a couple stainless drums, and something large for a mash tun (we use an old stainless steel bath tub that is ~150 gallons).

Next you'll need fermenters. This is where you'll spend a bunch probably. You'll want at least 4 probably, two to hold fermenting beer and two to either do secondary fermentation, or just to have the ability to expand.

You'll also need some kind of temperature control for those fermenters. That volume of fermenting beer gets very hot fermenting on it's own and you'll need something to chill it with, either the fermenters you purchased are jacketed therefore allowing you to pump chilled glycol, or you'll need immersion chillers that you can pump it though.

Then you need tons of various connectors, hoses, valves, and pumps. Not to mention burners, fuel, and a good water source. You'll also need kegs, lots of kegs.

nevermind, saw your reply below. As long as you cleaned and sanitized you should be a-ok! Relax, have a beer. Only because you don't have homebrew yet.

What kind of beer is it? Looks normal though. Co2 bubbles and some yeast foaming up at the top.

Newbie here: could I get a sanity check on my purchase of kettle, bottles, and capper? by DoNotLickToasterin Homebrewing

[–]tiredofnick 1 point2 points ago

Yep, looks good. The 10 gallon will allow you to do all grain brewing in the future. If you're just interested in doing extract then you could get a 5 gallon stock pot and save money there. Also you'll need 48 12oz bottles for a full 5 gallon batch.

Also with aluminum you'll need to build up an oxide layer on the metal. Just boil some water in it before you use it!
